B.Sc. Microbiology

B.Sc. Microbiology

ABOUT THE COURSE

The U.G. program in Microbiology was started during the academic year 1994 - 1995. Microbiology is the study of microorganisms which include bacteria, viruses, yeast, molds, protozoans, algae, fungi and other very small organisms. It is the youngest branch of biology that deals with study of micro organisms and their impact on human health and welfare. Microbiology is important because it helps us to understand and treat diseases. It is also important economically because it impacts the environment, research fields and biotechnology. This course is designed to introduce basic techniques and safety procedures in clinical microbiology. Emphasis is placed on the morphology and identification of common pathogenic organisms, aseptic technique, staining techniques, and usage of common media. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate theoretical comprehension in performing and interpreting basic clinical microbiology procedures.

ELIGIBILITY

H.S.C passed with Botany/Zoology/Biology/Microbiology is eligible for admission.

DURATION OF THE COURSE

The duration of the course is three years which includes six semesters with two semesters per year. Each semester has ninety working days followed by examinations at the end of each semester. The odd semesters shall consist of the period from June to November of each year and the even semester from December to April of each year.

ACADEMIC PROGRESSION

To impart knowledge on General Microbiology, Microbial Physiology, Immunology, Microbial Genetics, Molecular Biology, Genetic Engineering, Biotechnology, Bioinstrumentation, Bio-Statistics, Chemistry, Cell Structure, Microbial Growth & Reproduction, Bacteriology, Virology Mycology & parasitology etc and to provide practical skills in the relevant techniques. The students are motivated to participate in the co-curricular and extra-curricular activities for their overall development.

CAREER PROGRESSION

A career in microbiology can be a lucrative option in India as well as abroad. Numerous institutions all over India and abroad offer degree programs at under- graduate as well as at post graduate levels in the field of microbiology. Bachelor degree holders have employment potential as laboratory technicians or as biology teachers. Microbiologists find jobs in many places like research and development laboratories of government and private hospitals, research organizations, pharmaceutical, food, beverage and chemical industries. Universities, research institutes and industrial companies employ microbiologists to do basic, environmental, healthcare and agricultural research. Microbiologists can also become faculty members in Universities, Colleges or teachers in Schools, etc. For college teaching, a master's degree along with qualification of CSIR - NET but a doctorate opens more avenues.
