The MSW programme in Bharata Mata College started in the academic year 2004-05 under Mahatma Gandhi University. It is of two years duration, organized in four semesters with specializations in:

> Rural and urban community development
>Medical and psychiatric work

There are six courses offered in the first and second semesters along with fieldwork. In the fourth semester there are three compulsory courses and two electives apart from a project work. As in the first and second semesters concurrent fieldwork is an integral part of third and fourth semesters. The students also undergo one-month block placement both in third and fourth semesters.

Objectives of the social work programme:

Knowledge Objectives:

Dynamics of human development and psychology;

Roles played by the social systems of family, groups and community; and

Political economy of the corporate sector, mass media, state, political, legal and judicial systems. Welfare and development politics and schemes, from local to national levels, influenced by international institutions.

Attitude Objectives:

  • Attributes such as honesty, integrity, trustworthiness, creativity and optimism;
  • Values of social equity, democratic pluralism, people’s participation, local self-governance, self reliance and peaceful collaborative social dynamics; and
  • Sensitivity to marginalized and vulnerable groups such as women, dalits, tribal /indigenous people, children, youth, older persons, the Labour class, persons with disabilities, mental terminal illness, or varying sexual orientations, and others

Skill Objectives

Develop life skills such as self awareness and self confidence, motional competence and critical thinking and enrichment of communication and relations; and

Obtain skills for culture-sensitive methods of social change, within the generalist, clinical and social action approaches of social work, administration of voluntary organizations, policy and programme planning, implementing, monitoring and evaluation, participation in people’s movements, non formal education and participatory training, networking, legal aid, and advocacy and public interest litigations, aiming at democa\ration of the socio-economic-political systems, and empowerment of people to promote their basic rights to food and nutrition, water and sanitation, livelihood and employment, health and housing, environmental sustainability, and literacy and basic education and relief and rehabilitation of victims of emergency situations such as substance abuse, crime, trafficking, displacements, collective violence and disasters.

Our Course Director Fr. Dr. Varghese Kalapparambath, MA,MSW,B.Th,PhD,DSD(Canada) Fr. Dr. Vargheseis a leading academician and a practitioner in the field of social work. He took his M.A. and M.S.W degrees from the university of Kerala and Ph.Dfrom Cochin University of Sciencce and Technology. He studied in coady International Institute of St.Franzis Xaviour University Canada and secured a Diploma in social Development (DSD). He is a member of the academic council of Mahaatma Gandhi University, Kottayam. He is also recognized research guide of M.G. University for the last ten years.

Fr.Dr.Varghese was selected by Marywood University Peensylvania, USA as the distinguished visiting professor in Social Work in the year 2002. He has held various offices as Chairman Board of Studies (SW) M.G. University, Director and Head of Department of Social work, Rajagiri Collegeg of Social Sciences, Kalamassery, State coordinator, National Service Scheme, Ministry of IHRD, executives committee member Indian Association of Social Science Institutions, New Delhi, visiting International Scholar Western Michigan University, USA, Executive Director, Rajagiri Community Development Scheme working for the development of slums in Kalamassery Municipal area, and coordinator of international academic exchange programmes between Rajagiri and various universities in the USA and Europe.

Fr. Varghese participated in the social workers’ world conference in Sri Lanka in 1994. He has also participated in various national and international seminars and workshops in the field of social work. Fr.Varghese is a member of the National assessment and accreditation Council (NAAC) UGC. He has authored a book: Cultural Diversity and Aspirations of Indian Youth.

Our Course Coordinator
Smt. Kusumam John took her MSW (Medical & Psychiatric Social Work) from the M.G.University with 1st Rank. She has also done M.Sc(Psychology) from the ICE, University of Madras. Smt. Kusumam John brings to our campus several years of experience in the social Work field in various capacities as a Research Assistant, as a Counsellor in a De-addiction Centre, and as a Counselloing Centre. She has also worked for five years in Medical Mission Hospital, Kolenchery as a Psychiatric Social worker.
